Another one of these occasional thingys

A review of Bath Cafe Scientifique:-

It was, frankly, a bit rubbish. It was all about GM foods. The man who spoke was a GM researcher and he gave a very badly structured presentation on the science behind GM and nothing else. He had no discrimination about what constituted relevant information. He would wonder off the point telling you the latin name of a particular bacteria they use as a vector, and what it means in English, while the audience look at each other and scratch their heads because anyone who's not a biologist has completely lost the thread of what he's talking about, and we're all bored to tears.

At one point in the questions, this woman asked if part of the reason the foolish (this word only implied) public were suspicious of GM was that scientists didn't do a good enough job at explaining it. The speaker took this confidently, seemingly oblivious to the possible oblique insult, and talking about how yes, this was a very bad thing. And so therefore the silly media fills people's head with fluff and we should all listen to scientists more. AND THEN he said, 'and that's what Cafe Scientifique is about, giving scientists the chance to correct the misapprehensions and really sell their work'!

I've obviously paraphrased the guy a bit, but the last quote is word for word. These people are not proper SciComm and they DO NOT UNDERSTAND. Liam, you and I must re-awaken the Frome Scientific and Literary Society from it's deep but troubled sleep.
